About This Speed Test

This speed test measures your internet connection performance by downloading and uploading data to our servers. Results may vary based on your network conditions, device performance, and server load.

Ping (Latency): The time it takes for data to travel from your device to our server and back. Lower is better. Good: <50ms, Average: 50-100ms, High: >100ms.

What the numbers mean and why they move

What do download, upload and ping mean?

Download is how fast data reaches you and sets how quickly pages and video load. Upload is how fast data leaves you, which matters for video calls, backups and sending large files. Ping is the round trip time for a single small message: it decides how responsive a connection feels, and for calls and gaming it matters more than raw speed.

Why is my speed lower than what I pay for?

Advertised speeds are the maximum the line can carry, measured at the router. Wi-Fi, distance from the access point, other devices on the network, the age of your hardware and congestion at your provider all take a share before the number reaches this page. Testing over a cable, with other devices idle, gives the closest reading to what you are actually paying for.

How many times can I run the test?

Ten times an hour from the same address. The test moves real data in both directions, so the limit keeps one visitor from crowding out everyone else on a small server. If you hit it, wait a few minutes and try again.

Does a VPN slow down my connection?

Usually a little. Traffic takes a longer path, is encrypted and decrypted at both ends, and the exit server is shared with other users, so ping rises and throughput falls. A nearby server on a good provider often costs only a few percent; a distant or overloaded one can cost a great deal more. Testing with the VPN on and off shows you the real difference.

What speed do I actually need?

Standard definition video needs a few megabits, high definition around five to ten, and 4K roughly twenty five. Video calls need modest speed in both directions but suffer badly from high ping and jitter. Most households are limited by Wi-Fi and latency long before the advertised line speed becomes the constraint.
