IP Lookup FAQ
What a lookup can and cannot tell you about an address
What can I find out from an IP address?
A lookup returns the country, region and approximate city an address is registered to, plus its timezone, coordinates and the network it belongs to - the provider or hosting company and their ASN. It does not return a name, a street address, a phone number or anything else identifying a person. That information sits with the provider and is released only under legal process.
Can I find someone's exact address from their IP?
No. The coordinates a lookup returns are the centre of a broad area the provider serves, often a whole city or region, and they come with an accuracy radius usually measured in tens of kilometres. Any service claiming to pin an IP to a house is guessing or selling you something. Only the internet provider can map an address to a subscriber.
What is an ASN?
An Autonomous System Number identifies the network that announces a block of addresses to the rest of the internet - usually an internet provider, a hosting company or a large organisation. It is the most reliable part of a lookup, because it comes from routing data rather than from an estimate. A hosting provider's ASN rather than a consumer one is a strong hint the address belongs to a server, a proxy or a VPN.
Why does the lookup show the wrong city?
City-level geolocation is an estimate built from what providers publish and how traffic is routed, not a measurement. Mobile networks route through regional gateways, some providers register entire ranges to a single head office, and address blocks are reassigned faster than the databases update. Country is usually right; city is often a long way out.
Can I look up IPv6 addresses?
Yes. Enter an IPv6 address in the same box and it is looked up the same way. IPv6 coverage in geolocation databases is generally thinner than IPv4, so expect country-level results to hold up better than city-level ones.
